Hi. Masada is a historic fortress located on top of a cliff in the Judean Desert near the shore of the Dead Sea in Israel. A place of considerable historical and cultural significance, it has become a symbol of resistance and freedom for the Jewish people.
masada was built during the time of King Herod the Great in the late first century BC as a fortified palace. However, Masada gained its real fame during the Jewish war against Rome.
In 73 CE, after Jerusalem fell into Roman hands, Jewish rebels known as Siciarians occupied Masada. They made it their fortress and managed to resist the Roman legions for several years.
The Roman general Flavius Silva organized a siege of Masada. Surrounded, the Siciarians made a collective decision to commit suicide, preferring death to slavery or execution at the hands of the Romans. According to legend, their commander Eleazar Ben-Yaira suggested that his fellow soldiers burn all the grain and food, destroying their families, and then commit suicide. Thus, the Siciarians, preferring death to freedom, gave themselves to be taken from the hands of the Siciarians than to be captured.
